The Kiwanis Music Arts Festival of St. Catharines

Rules & Regulations

The Festival shall be known as “The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.”

Each discipline notes specific details. Please review before registering.

The Ontario Music Festivals Association holds a Provincial Festival each year. As a member of the Ontario Music Festivals Association, The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines recommends certain competitors advance to the Provincial Festival.

Any questions not specifically covered in these Rules & Regulations shall be referred to the Rules and Regulations Committee, whose decisions on such matters shall be final and binding. The Chair, or any member of this committee, is empowered to enforce all rules appearing in the Syllabus.

Entries will be accepted from January 1, 2018 to February 15, 2018. Log into your Solarislive account to register.

Late entries will not be accepted.

Entry fees cannot be refunded except in the case of an entry being rejected by the committee or reason approved by the Festival Chair.

Entries will be processed in the order they are received. We reserve the right to close entries to the competition once the maximum capacity has been reached.

All competitions, unless otherwise stated, shall be open to amateurs only. For the purpose of this festival, an amateur shall be defined as follows, “Any person, who in the 12-month period preceding the 2018 Festival year, has not received remuneration of $2,500 or more for the profession or practice of music or other performing arts”.

In all classes where an age limit is set, the competitor shall be no older than the prescribed age on December 31 prior to the festival year unless otherwise stated.

Competitors 15 years of age and under will be considered juniors, and competitors 16 years of age and over will be considered seniors. In any ensemble class or duet, a competitor shall be permitted to perform more than once, provided such competitor performs a different part each time.

Conductors may be amateur or professional, and may conduct any number of ensembles in the same class or in any number of classes. However, in competition, a conductor may neither sing nor play any of the parts, unless it is a definite piano or organ accompaniment required by the arrangement.

Competitors will be disqualified and removed from the festival premises without a refund if found with, or under the influence of drugs or alcoholic beverages.

It is the responsibility of each competitor to arrange for his or her own accompaniment.

Solo performances must be memorized to compete in classes.

In instrumental and piano classes, repeats are to be permitted unless otherwise stated.

Transposition of vocal scores will be allowed unless specified under class.

Photocopied music is not permitted. Please respect copyright rules when performing at the Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.

In “Own Choice” classes, the selection must be of artistic merit comparable to the set pieces in the same section, otherwise 10% of the marks may be deducted. Competitors may not choose selections performed by them during the preceding two years at The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.

An original copy of the selection must be provided by the competitor for the Adjudicator before the start of the class. Otherwise, the performance shall be adjudicated without marks. Adjudicators copies must be reclaimed at the secretary’s desk immediately after the class.

All competitors and their accompaniment are required to be in the auditorium at least 20 minutes before the program times listed for their classes. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

The Program Committee reserves the right to divide any class into two or more sections, should the number of entries warrant.

A performance may be stopped at any time when the Adjudicator’s opinion has been formed. The Adjudicator’s decision shall be final.

Competitors must perform in the exact order indicated on the performance schedule. The Festival reserves the right to change the order when necessary.

Protests regarding Adjudicators’ evaluations will only be accepted in writing via mail to our Festival address or emailed to our Festival Coordinator. No communication may be made with the Adjudicator at any time.

Proof of age may be required to be produced to the committee at any time prior, during, or after the competition.
