Rules & Regulations:

Participants in Speech Arts are also eligible to participate at the Provincial competition in the following ages groups.

Elementary Level:Competitors between the ages of 11-12 as of December 31st the year prior to the provincials.

Junior Level:Competitors between the ages of 13-14 as of December 31st the year prior to the provincials.

Intermediate Level: Competitors between the ages of 15-16 as of December 31st the year prior to the provincials.

Senior Level: Competitors between the ages of 17-18 as of December 31st theyear prior to the provincials.

Advanced Level:Competitors between the ages of 19-28 as of December 31st the year prior to the provincials.

Competitors at the provincials must perform a minimum of 3 selections to a maximum of 4 selections. Selections must show a contrast in mood (ie. serious, comical, reflective).

Selections can come from the following categories (drama, prose, lyric poetry, Mime, Public Speaking).  One selection must be performed at the local festival.

If you are interested in the provincial competition, please let our festival adjudicator know so that we can provide the appropriate graded score sheets to the adjudicator.  If the adjudicator recommends you for provincial competition you will provided with further OMFA registration details.  You can also find further details on the Speech Arts provincial competition on the OMFA website.

Hand-Held Props – Items used on stage by the performer that can be held in their hands, eg. brush, wand, mirror scarf. If requested a chair or small box to sit on will be provided.

Superior: surpasses the expectations of the Adjudicator

Excellent: is consistent with the degree of skill expected by the Adjudicator

Very Good: a very satisfactory performance

Good: a satisfactory performance

Participation:

If there is a preference of a.m. or p.m. for JK and SK classes please inform our festival coordinator.  Classes may be combined in the choral speaking categories.

Split class rule for choral speaking: grade level for entry is determined by the grade majority in the class. An even split will perform in the older grade level.

Special needs considerations must be communicated to the Adjudicator prior to the beginning of the class.

Poetry: Language is molded into some kind of design; either lyric or narrative.

Lyric: A short unified poem expressing the poet’s own experience and emotion to be presented in a relaxed stance to no movement. The speaker interprets.

Narrative: A poem which tells a story and usually has dialogue. Telling the story is the primary concern of the speaker.

Drama: The speaker is the character. The actor assumes the language, movement and dress of the character portrayed.

Preschool category: Children attending an institute before ELKP; Nursery school, Casa Montessori etc…
